Daniel Frank emerged as a standout artist in the 2025 edition of The Funk Before Christmas Art Show, earning Editor’s Pick recognition for both his work and the thoughtful artistic voice behind it. From the moment his piece was first seen, it drew immediate attention and admiration, quickly becoming a strong contender for high praise, Best of Show consideration, and ultimately Editor’s Pick.
Beyond the visual impact of his work, Daniel’s participation in the Take One Interview offered a deeper look into his creative process and personal journey. Though he approached the interview with some nervousness, that quickly gave way to insight and authenticity. As he spoke, a clear spark emerged—an enthusiasm for art and discovery that mirrors the energy present in his work.
Daniel’s artistic practice is rooted in curiosity and evolution. He often begins with a clear plan, but allows space for the work to change as it develops. “When I first started this piece, I had planned on it being an evolution or expansion on previous pieces of work that I had completed,” he explains. His long-standing fascination with optical illusions, shaped by childhood experiences with Magic Eye books and science center exhibits, continues to inform his approach. Over time, his focus has shifted beyond illusion alone: “My intention for this piece became more about perception rather than just illusion.”
That willingness to adapt is especially important in his chosen medium. Spray paint demands flexibility, and Daniel embraces its unpredictability. “So many things can go wrong when working with spray paint… having the ability to be spontaneous is almost necessary,” he says. Careful planning exists alongside instinctive decision-making, allowing the work to evolve naturally while still maintaining structure and intention.
A defining element of Daniel’s artistic language is his use of a black-and-white palette. “The black and white palette plays a role in a lot of my artwork—it is the foundation, especially in my optical artwork,” he notes. Even when color appears elsewhere in his practice, the ideas often begin in monochrome. For this piece, introducing color was never considered, reinforcing his focus on form, contrast, and perception.

Much of Daniel’s confidence as an artist stems from the support he has received throughout his life. He speaks openly about the encouragement of his family, particularly his parents, who have always pushed him to pursue what makes him happy. Early memories—such as his grandmother saving newspaper “how to draw” sections just for him—highlight how deeply that support runs. That environment not only nurtured his creativity but also gave him the space to imagine art as a long-term pursuit.
Receiving Editor’s Pick recognition has been both affirming and transformative for Daniel. “This painting has been and remains a piece of work that I am incredibly proud of,” he shares. The acknowledgment has helped solidify his identity as an artist, turning something that once felt difficult to claim into something undeniable.
Daniel Frank’s recognition at The Funk Before Christmas Art Show reflects an artist in a pivotal moment—grounded in support, open to risk, and increasingly confident in his voice. It is a strong indication of meaningful work already accomplished and even more still to come.
