Maya McGrocery performing at LMNT Poetry: Iration and Vibration

When Maya McGrocery steps onto a stage, something electric happens. It’s not just her words—it’s her presence. Her voice flows like music, her cadence carries confidence, and her humor makes even the most crowded room feel intimate. The clip of her latest performance may only reveal a fraction of her brilliance, but even in that brief glimpse, you can feel it: magic unfolding in real time.

At the center of this performance lies an untitled poem—a fierce, playful, and unapologetically spiritual piece that reveals McGrocery’s ability to blend wordcraft with presence. It’s not merely spoken word; it’s conjuring.

The Poem: A Sonic Wave of Identity and Power

McGrocery begins by claiming herself as a “Magical mermaid moving through my roots of magnificent moments merely. Mastering my mind…” Her alliteration here is a flex of skill, but also a statement of self-mastery. She’s setting the tone: she is the magic, she is the moment, she is the movement.

Then she escalates:

“Magnetic Magnetimus Magically Melanated Mother. I serve a god that moves mountains. It’s what allows me to make these money moves.”

It’s a triumphant affirmation of Black womanhood, faith, and agency. She is not shy about her spiritual source or her earthly power. She makes “mother motions that make you wanna move,” and in doing so, she reclaims the stage as both pulpit and playground.

Performance as Power

The poem is not linear—it moves like jazz. McGrocery toggles between confidence and humor, between calling out the audience and lifting them up. Her “astronomical anointing” and “astronomical ass” create a tension that’s equal parts sacred and profane, inviting listeners to reconsider the false dichotomy between holiness and sensuality.

Her line “I’ll be an angel the Almighty is sending into the atmosphere just to amplify all auras” lands like a benediction. She isn’t just reciting poetry—she’s transmitting energy.

The McGrocery Effect

What makes Maya McGrocery magnetic is not just her writing. It’s her embodiment. She moves between swagger and sanctity with ease, using humor to disarm and rhythm to captivate. The audience doesn’t just watch her—they participate, pulled into her orbit. Her art doesn’t simply exist in the moment; it leaves residue, like glitter on skin.

The untitled poem stands as a testament to what performance poetry can be: a celebration of identity, a confrontation of stereotypes, and a reimagining of spirituality as something expansive and inclusive.

In short, when Maya McGrocery steps on stage, she doesn’t just perform. She transforms.
